Cathedral Treasury

The Aachen Cathedral Treasury (Domschatzkammer) is home to one of the most important collections of religious art and relics in Europe. Located next to the cathedral, the treasury showcases priceless items that tell the story of Aachen’s spiritual and political history.

Visitors can see artifacts dating back to the time of Charlemagne, many of which played a role in coronation ceremonies and medieval religious life. One of the standout pieces is the Lothar Cross, a richly decorated reliquary that was used in royal processions.

The treasury also houses the golden bust of Charlemagne, which holds relics believed to be from the emperor himself. These treasures, along with ornate chalices, liturgical vestments, and ancient manuscripts, offer a glimpse into the artistry and craftsmanship of the Middle Ages.

The treasury’s collection is deeply tied to Aachen’s role as a center of power and pilgrimage. Many of the objects were gifted by emperors and kings, and they continue to attract visitors.
