The Baroque Sankt Nikolauskirche originally served as the monastery church for the Franciscan brothers, but today it functions as a city church. Over the centuries, the church has been modified and restored several times, particularly after the heavy damage sustained during World War II.

On New Year’s Eve 2010-2011, a stray firework caused a fire that damaged the beautiful high altar. Since then, the church has been restored, although the paintings still need to be installed. Instead of replicating the original works, young artists from the region have been invited to create new artworks.
